An Annoying Sound of Summer

Summer is a wonderful season, full of sights and sounds that indicate everyone is kicking back and having fun. One of those sounds represents all the wonder of summer, but oh is it annoying. That is the sound of the ice cream truck.

We live on a short, but densely populated street. Our Avenue, as it is known, is only about 500 metres long (for my American readers, that translates to about one third of a mile), but I’d guess there are somewhere between 4,000-6,000 people living on that short stretch. That population density combined with the park across the street makes it an obvious stop for the ice cream trucks. There are a few trucks that come by each offering their own sound of summer.

One of the trucks plays music that represents the most annoying sound of our summer. The truck pulls up and loudly plays a voice that sings “HELLLLLLOOO!” followed by the tune to “She’ll be riding six white horses when she comes” followed by four loud honks. Given the placement of our dining room window it sounds like someone is in our apartment shouting “HELLLLLLOOO!” and then honking at us.

Here is a picture of our view from the dining room window, with the offending ice cream truck peddling its offerings to the children at the park and others coming home from work, perfectly willing to use their tired state as reason to eat ice cream for dinner.

 HELLLLLLOOO!..... HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK

  1. Um, is it that time of the month? Seriously, you are crabbing about an ice cream truck? You are probably just jealous because A) you can't run fast enough to get down there and catch it before it leaves and B) you are not allowing yourself the luxury of having Ice Cream for dinner. Ice cream has eggs and sugar and other important stuff like chemicals and sea weed and alcohol with some vanilla in it. All this is good for your colon health and if you are looking to put a lil more junk in the trunk having two scoops will get ya a booty like J-LO IN NO TIME! Yep, this sounds like a case of Ice Cream ENVY! Somebody's on a diet and their blood sugar is a little low. Get thee to the ice cream truck and get a sugar high and you'll be singing that tune in no time! Love Moi!

  2. Hmmm, sure I may have ice cream envy, but given your whining of late, I'm guessing you too have some food envy going on.

Next time I hear the truck I will try to get my j-lo butt in gear and have an ice cream for the both of us.

    Love you too!

  3. Did you move, or did you peek out around the corner from your balcony to take that picture? I have to say, I never knew what all the complaining about the creepiness of the ice cream trucks was about until I lived on Our Avenue facing that park. I was always kinda glad when summer was over.

  4. Hi Kim,

Still the same apartment. That's the view from the dining room window. Similar view as your old bathroom. (Not often I compare my dining room to someone's bathroom.)

Been missing you again lately. We have a new neighbour across the hall - a single guy who must still be in grade school. (Either the kid is 5 or I've gotten so old I can't judge the age of the young punks anymore.) That apartment has never been the same since you left.
